Reports and presentations
Please find below recently (starting in February 2008) published reports or presentations delivered in the context of the partnership's activities. We have chosen this somehow eclectic presentation, structured only by the date of publication on our website, in order to be able to keep in track with number of incoming reports and presentations without having to reshuffle categories every other month.
However, a number of documents considered as key documents for the partnership (treaties, international conventions and framework papers) have been posted in a special section mentioned in the header. If you still cannot find the document you are looking for, please try the search function on top of the page or have a look on the PEFAC site, which offers a real digital library with a number os search functions.
Presentations delivered at the COMIFAC side event during COP9 CBD in Bonn (May 28, 2008)
12-09-2008 19:18
A lively discussion span off after five highly informative and well-structured presentations offered by COMIFAC's secretariat, CBFP's facilitator, RAPAC, the speaker of the CBFP Working Group on Biodiversity and the Director of the TNS Foundation. Participants commented on the sustainability of RAPAC's financing scheme, the challenges encountered when ensuring financial transparency for the Sangha Trinational Foundation and the possibilities for a non-binding partnership to exert pressure on international actors. The last question related to recent experiences in opening up towards Asian operators and the wish expressed by the German facilitation to enhance the private sector's further implication in CBFP's activities.
In response to this last intervention, Hans Schipulle called upon the fact that any operators extracting forest resources have to respect the legal framework of the country in which they are implemented. Harmonising forest policies on a regional level can thus already be considered as a real progress in this direction as it might work as an incentive for operators that are likely to be frustrated by too many differing laws. He also reminds sceptic minds of the consumers who demand more and more transparency for forest product supply chains and certified products. Producers have to react to these exigencies if they want to continue selling their products. Thierry Liabastre from the Bureau d'Appui Franco-Allemand further stressed the importance of CBFP's double-edged strategy: while one the one hand the network stipulated enlargened dialogue, producing countries and the European Union fully assume their (political) responsibility by intensifying negotiations putting forward the FLEGT process.
With regards to a sustainable RAPAC financing scheme, Jean-Pierre Agnangoye explains that, once the ministers will have taken a decision in this respect, the structure will certainly be financed by the COMIFAC financial mechanism. However, given the sheer size of the protected area sites network, RAPAC hopes to be able to further count upon its partner, the European Commission.
