COMIFAC adopts its Plan for Action 2009-2010

Reunited once again in Brazzaville after an ordinary session in Bangui during the first week of September (9-11) COMIFAC's ministers continued to discuss issues of common interest for Central Africa's forests. A common understanding has been reached on regional forest monitoring and control, the road map for harmonising regional forest policies, and directives on sustainable management of vegetable non-timber forest products (NTFP) in Central Africa. They also reviewed COMIFAC's activities during the last evaluation period from September 2006 to August 2008 and completed the renewal of COMIFAC's Secretariat  in accordance with the regulations laid down in the Brazzaville Treaty 2005.

Yvonne Mboissona, Minister for Water, Forests and Hunting Affairs to the Centralafrican Republic and incumbent President of the COMIFAC, underlined the importance of  this extraordinary Brazzaville venue as the time had come to define a new political and technical orientation for a better coordination of decision-making structures concerning  forest conservation and management in Central Africa. «Our agenda certainly reflects the dimension of current issues at stake, and  the decisions to be taken will enable us to manage our regional institution in the short, medium and long-term. Adopting the paragraph concerning new secretariat staff will grant the COMIFAC with those human resources needed for implementing its various programmes» declared Mme Mboissona.

Following a new election procedure, the final candidates have been chosen by mutual consensus:
Executive Secretary: Raymond MBITIKON (CAR)
Deputy Executive Secretary and Technical Coordinator: Martin TADOUM (Cameroon)
Administrative and Financial Director: Etienne MASUMBUKO (Burundi)

COMIFAC's secretariat is located in Yaoundé, Cameroon. It has been common consensus since the setting up of COMIFAC's structures that the Executive Secretary should not be a Cameroon national, non-regarding the qualifications of possible candidates.
